MANILA — Defending champions Dennis Orcollo and Lee Van Corteza survived the stiff challenge of Chile’s Alejandro Carvajal and Enrique Rojas to eke out a 7-5 win and advance to the second round of the Betway World Cup of Pool yesterday in Portsmouth, England.
Orcollo and Corteza were threatened many times by the unheralded Chilean pair but got the lucky breaks to secure a place in the next phase of the annual knockout-style 9-ball team competition.
The Filipinos will take on France’s Stephan Cohen and Alex Montpelier in the second round of the tournament participated in by 32 teams from 31 countries.
Cohen and Montpelier defeated Italy’s Fabio Petroni and Daniele Corrieri, 7-4, in one of the other opening round results.
The Philippines is seeking its second straight World Cup of Pool title and fourth overall along with the top purse of $60,000.
Carvajal and Rojas were on the verge of tying the score at 3-3 but failed to convert on the 9-ball that allowed the Philippines to take a 4-2 lead. (Manila Bulletin)
