Jason Robertson may yet be the first Filipino-American to play in the National Hockey League (NHL).
His Filipina-American mother, Mercedes Robertson, said Jason was drafted 39th overall in the NHL draft held recently in Chicago. He was picked by the Dallas Stars.
Jason, 18 years old, attended recently the Dallas Stars development camp in Frisco, Texas. Afterwards, he attended the USA Hockey’s World Junior Summer Showcase at USA Hockey Arena in Plymouth, Michigan. He will also participate in the NHL Prospect Tournament to be hosted by the Detroit Red Wings in Traverse City on Sept 8-12.
According to a news report from Frisco, Texas, Jason did pretty well in the development camp of the Dallas Stars.
The camp, the report stated, was “a big chance for several prospects to make a first impression. As they say, you only get one chance to make a first impression. So far it’s gone pretty well for Jason Robertson in that aspect.”
It was noted in same news report that “skating was the only thing really holding Robertson back during his draft year. He’s got an elite shot and is a natural goal scorer, but concerns about his skating led to him falling out of the first round, and Dallas took advantage of that drop when they picked him with the eighth pick of the second round (No. 39 overall).”
Jason was described as “a natural goal scorer” and was ranked very high in all the scouting services you see.” Dallas Stars general manager Jim Nill said, “We’re very fortunate to be able to grab a player like that.”
Jason was born on July 22, 1999 in Pasadena, California. His parents are Hugh Robertson and Mercedes Dano Robertson. Jason attended George Washington University Online High School (Virginia).
The Robertson family lives in Northville, Michigan.
Mrs. Robertson was born in Manila. Her father, Acisclo Lopez Dano, is from Carmen, Bohol, while her mother, Ofelia Dancel Corpus, is from San Antonio, Zambales.
Mrs. Robertson moved to Los Angeles at age 3.
Jason’s siblings are Alexandra (Robertson) Harrison, Michael, Brianne and Nick.
Mrs. Robertson also told the Filipino Star News, “My youngest son Nick was drafted last April in the 1st round (16th overall) of the Ontario Hockey League by Peterborough Petes. This is the same league in which Jason’s team, Kingston Frontenacs, playing against eight times during the regular season.”
She said, “Nick continues to train as he prepares for the start of his season with the Peterborough Petes.”
