The Filipino American Sports Teams of Detroit (FAST-D) will open its spring basketball tournament at 9 a.m. on March 7, 2015 in the gym of the Cross of Christ Lutheran Church at 1100 Lone Pine St., Bloomfield Hills, Michigan.
Ron Gayta, a member of FAST-D’s executive board, said that 20 teams will participate in the tournament which will end on May 16, 2015.
Gayta said that the number of teams to be playing and the divisions to which they belong are: Open division, eight; teenagers division, four; 10-12 years old, four; and 7-9 years old, four.
He said that FAST-D will assign the 134 players registered and trained for the tournament to the various teams. He noted that this is a departure from the traditional way of forming teams, and the reason for this is to lessen unsportsmanlike hostilities among the players.
Gayta said that FAST-D, a 501 C3 non-profit created in October 2010, has been conducting sports tournaments in the last four years for the benefit of Filipino-American children.
FAST-D has been holding fund-raising activities to enable it to foot the expenses for its tournaments. Gayta said that one such fund-raiser is its poker tournament which it conducts every now and then.
One such tournament is set on March 30-April 1 at Cicarellis in Shelby township. FAST-D needs volunteers to help in the conduct of the poker tournament, Gayta said, adding that the volunteers need no experience in playing poker.
FAST-D has been conducting basketball clinics for kids who pay only $10 for the entire duration of the clinics. For participating in the basketball league, the children pay $30, which covers the cost of jerseys, awards and trophies.
