MANILA — San Miguel Beer’s sophomore center June Mar Fajardo is on track to win a second straight Best Player of the Conference (BPC) award after he finished No. 1 again in the statistical points (SP) at the end of the elimination round of the PBA (Philippine Basketball Association) Commissioner’s Cup.
Despite missing two games due to an ankle injury, the 6-foot-10 Cebu pride averaged 12.6 points, 10.7 rebounds, 1.3 assists, 0.6 steals, and 1.9 blocks. He’s the No. 1 local rebounder.
That gave the 24-year-old Fajardo a 31.71 SP average, just .4 point ahead of teammate and reigning MVP (Most Valuable Player) Arwind Santos who averaged 14.9 points, 6.6 rebounds, 2 assists, 1.3 steals and 0.4 blocks.
Not far behind are Talk ’N Text’s Ranidel de Ocampo and Jayson Castro with 30.2 and 30.1 SPs, respectively.
At fifth place is another San Miguel Beer player, Marcio Lassiter, who chalked up 28.0 SP.
If Fajardo clinches his second BPC award, he would have a good chance of winning this season’s MVP.
The last player to win back-to-back BPC was Ginebra’s Mark Caguioa, who bagged the Commissioner’s Cup and Governors’ Cup awards on his way to winning his first MVP trophy in 2012.
That would also be Fajardo’s feathers in the cap if he emerges best player of the conference. (Waylon Galvez, MB)
