MANILA — Hall of Fame trainer Freddie Roach said Manny Pacquiao’s camp is doing everything possible and reasonable to make a fight with Floyd Mayweather happen but the unbeaten US fighter is playing hard to get.
“We’re doing everything possible to make this fight happen on our side and that’s all we can do,” Roach told BoxingScene.com.
Some three weeks ago, Mayweather came out smoking on US television, issuing Pacquiao a challenge but demanding that he calls the shots every step of the way.
Roach, who began training Pacquiao in mid-2001, feels Mayweather should not be running the show.
Still, Roach remains hopeful that the mega fight becomes a reality this year as the public is demanding for it to take place after years of botched negotiations.
Pacquiao is also hoping that Mayweather gets to see the light and sign his name in a fight deal.
“This is my Christmas and New year’s wish…for the Mayweather fight to happen,” said Pacquiao from General Santos City.
Although Pacquiao has made it clear that money won’t stand in the way of the talks, he said Mayweather has other demands that are unreasonable.
Mayweather, who is very protective of his 47-0 record, wants the fight to happen on May 2, 2015 and that every other thing about the promotion will be handled by him alone.
Pacquiao’s only role, Mayweather said, will be “to show up” on fight night. (Nick Giongco, Manila Bulletin)
