MANILA — Twenty-seven soldiers, paramilitary men and a member of the Revolutionary Proletarian Army-Alex Boncayao Brigade (RPA-ABB) were killed in clashes with the New People’s Army (NPA) this month, the New People’s Army (NPA) claimed.

The NPA report said four soldiers died in two attacks in Cabanglasan, Bukidnon on July 4 and 5, with one of them slain during a harassment operation while three of the fatalities were killed by a command-detonated explosive (CDX.)

Two paramilitary men—Josh and Reynaldo Licawan—were killed in an ambush in San Fernando, Bukidnon on July 13, with Pvt. Benjamin “Nonong” Salusad wounded seriously.

The following day, a platoon of the 8th Infantry Battalion (IB) launched an operation in Barangay Mahayag, Quezon, Bukidnon but an NPA unit harassed them, killing two troopers, but losing one of their comrades.

In Arakan, North Cotabato, NPA guerrillas manning a checkpoint clashed with members of the Presidential Security Group (PSG) riding in two vans on July 19, with four soldiers wounded as the guerrillas withdrew.

NPA members also arrested Roeglio Magno, said to be an asset of the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG) of the Philippine National Police (PNP) in Bukidnon.

PO1 Alfredo S. Basabica Jr. of the PNP in Cateel, Davao Oriental, was also taken into custody by the NPA at a checkpoint in Compostela Valley on July 11.

Elements of the 1st Pulang Bagani Company of the NPA raided the house of a businessman who doubles as an intelligent agent in Calinan District, Davao City on Juily 7 and seized an M-2 Carbine rifle.

On July 16, the NPA in Zamboanga del Norte ambushed a unit of the 44th IB in Purok Biwa, Barangay Titik 1, Leon Postigo, Zamboanga del Norte and killed one soldier and wounding seven.

Five NPA members were wounded while a civilian was unfortunarely killed in the crossfire.

On the same day, an NPA platoon ambushed troops of the 42nd IB sent to reinforce the beleaguered soldiers, killing 10 soldiers in the process, while wounding three.

NPA fighter Ka Masaw was killed while another guerrilla was injured.

Four firearms were confiscated by the NPA fighters who raided the house of Cortes, Surigao del Sur Vice Mayor Emmanuel Suarez in Barangay Mabahid on July 18.

Suarez was asked by the NPA to stop engaging in illegal logging and fishing in his own town.
In Can-Avid, Eastern Samar, NPA guerrillas harassed two columns of the 14th IB in the morning of July 7, killing three soldiers.

The Roselyn Pelle Command of the NPA (NPA-RPC) in Negros also punished Charlie Boliboli, a member of the Revolutionary Proletarian Army-Alex Boncayao Brigade (RPA-ABB), in Salvador Benedicto, Negros Occidental for his role in the killings of peasants, oppression and landgrabbing in Barangay Bago of the same town.

Boliboli, NPA-RPC spokesperson Cecil Estrella said, was active in counterrevolutionary activities and has served as a guide in military operations.

The Norben Gruta Command of the NPA in Camarines Sur reported a clash with elements of the 9th Infantry Division (ID) in Barangay Salvacion, Ragay town on July 19, with one soldier killed.
