The third annual Celebration of St. Lorenzo Ruiz Feast Day will be held on Sept. 29, 2017 at the St. Thomas a’Becket church in Canton.

The celebration will start with a bilingual mass (English with Tagalog hymns) at 6 p.m. This will be followed by a cultural program and dinner in the church’s Family Life Center.

Filipino parishioners at St. Thomas a’Becket and nearby parishes have been meeting every first Friday of the month after the 9 a.m. mass in preparation for the celebration of the fist Filipino saint.

The devotees pray the St. Lorenzo novena and later meet to discuss problems concerning Filipinos especially those who are elderly and alone.

Other topics include suggestions to donate clothes and books to places hit by typhoons and visit sick Filipinos confined in the hospital.

This year, a new ministry was started. It calls for the statue of St. Lorenzo Ruiz to be brought to homes of Filipino families. It is called “St Lorenzo visits Filipino Families in America.”

A Filipino family may request that the St. Lorenzo statue be brought to their home because it is going to celebrate a birthday, baptism, anniversary and/or  graduation. One family requested that St. Lorenzo stay in their home when the grandmother died. Every night the novena is prayed by the whole family while the statue of St. Lorenzo is in the house.

Most often, the statue of St. Lorenzo stays with the family for two weeks or one month.

With its many projects, members of St. Lorenzo Filipino Group-Canton show their humble way of “taking up our own roles in building God’s  kingdom  (Synod 16).”

The nine-day-novena before the feast day celebration will start on Sept.20 at 9:45 a.m. and will end on Sept. 28.

A meeting will be held every Friday this September at 6 p.m. The meeting is set at 6 p.m. to enable members who are students or those who are working to attend it.
