Famous Filipina singer-actress Lea Salonga is returning to Broadway to play the co-lead role in the new musical “Allegiance” which will be staged beginning November, this year.
This was learned from a press release issued by AARP, a nonprofit organization noted for its services to the elderly.
Lea has two Broadway hits to her credits. These are “Miss Saigon” and “Mulan.” For her outstanding performance in these two musicals, she received the Tony Award.
Lea’s co-lead star in the musical is George Takei who has gained prominence in his role in “Star Trek” and “Heroes.” The musical also features Telly Leung who performed in musicals “Godspell” and “Glee.”
“Allegiance” is about one family’s extraordinary journey in this untold American story. A mysterious envelope leads Sam Kimura (Takei) back 60 years to a time when he (played as a young man by Telly Leung) and his sister Kei (Lea Salonga) strive to save their family from the wrongful imprisonment of Japanese Americans during World War II. Sam enlists in the army to prove the Kimuras’s loyalty, but Kei joins draft resisters fighting for the rights of their people.
Their paths take them from the lush farmlands of California to the wastelands of Wyoming to the battlefields of Europe, and their divided loyalties threaten to tear them apart forever. But as long-lost memories are unlocked, Sam finds that it is never too late to forgive and to recognize the redemptive power of love.
In its press release, AARP announced a special offer to its members for discounted tickets to the Broadway musical.
“AARP celebrates diverse storytelling that reflects the experiences of people 50-plus,” said Daphne Kwok, AARP vice president of Multicultural Leadership, Asian American and Pacific Islander Audience. “George Takei continues his life’s work of informing and educating the public about the injustices of the internment of Japanese Americans through a powerful medium — the stage.”
