When then ABS-CBN executive for talent management and ex-actress Beverly Vergel left the Philippines a few years ago to reside in Canada, she noted that Kim Chiu, one of her wards, was not yet a big star. Now, Kim is one of the top young actresses, be in movies or TV. So Bev expected Kim would be affected by success.
During the recent Kapamilya Star Magic Show in Canada in which Kim was the headliner together with Kathryn Bernardo and Daniel Padilla, Bev had the chance to be with her. Bev served as host at the conferences on the show, and for days the duo spent time together.
“Kim has not changed a bit. She’s still very sweet, unaffected, not a bit aloof or swell-headed in dealing with her Pinoy fans in Canada. I’ve been amazed, too, by her tremendous talent in dancing, comic acts and even in singing. Before, medyo shy at conscious si Kim. Ngayon, bigay na bigay na siya,” Bev told me.
In her Twitter account, Kim related her first experience to see snow and play in the snow, which overwhelmed her. She admitted that it’s one of her most unforgettable moments in Canada.

Jake Cuenca never bagged a Best Actor trophy although he had been nominated several times in the Philippines, but it is ironic that it took a foreign country to honor him. Yes, at the International Film Festival-Manhattan held in New York, Jake won the Best Actor award for her role in the indie film “Mulat.” Jake himself received the award.
“What an unexpected triumph, indeed, for me! The more I aspire to be a competent performer these days. I’m inspired to the fullest, and not to be choosy in accepting roles. What counts most is the very essence of your role,” Jake told showbiz writers upon his arrival in Manila.
At the same film fest in New York, Pinay actress Liza Dino garnered the Best Actress trophy for her role in “Nomine Matris” which was chosen as Best Film. Diane Ventura who helmed “Mulat” was adjudged Best Director.
Come to think of it, low-budgeted movies have outshone local mainstream films in international festivals. These movies have consistently won the nod of judges in Asia, Europe and U.S.

A controversial mother figure in showbiz who’s noted for her volatile nature is said to have given up her ‘pakialamera’ ways with regards to her equally talk-about daughter. “Punong-puno na ako sa katigasan ng ulo niya at sobrang love fling. That’s the life she craves, so be it,” she told showbiz writers.
