Lawyer-philanthropist Loida Nicolas Lewis, who is one of the most influential Filipino American leaders here in the United States, will be coming to Michigan on Jan. 16, 2016 to lead a campaign rally for Mar Roxas and Leni Robredo who are candidates for president and vice president, respectively, in the Philippine presidential elections in May, next year.
This was announced by Ed Navarra, former national chairman of the National Federation Filipino American Association (NaFFAA).
Navarra said the rally will be held at noon (on Jan. 16) in the Fuji Japanese Buffet on John R. Road, Madison Heights.
Lewis, who will be flying from New York, will be the principal speaker at the rally. She led recently a similar rally in Chicago, Illinois. She believed that the Roxas-Robredo tandem will be able to continue the “Daang Matuwid” anti-graft campaign of incumbent President Noynoy Aquino.
Roxas, who is former secretary of interior and local governments, and Robredo, an incumbent congresswoman of Camarines Sur, are running under the Liberal Party banner.
Navarra urged Filipinos in Michigan to support the Roxas-Robredo ticket. The former NaFFAA chairman said, “While most of us cannot vote in the Philippine elections, our hearts are still connected in many ways than one to our homeland.
“Only a few of us are dual citizens who can vote (if they have registered) but our families, relatives and friends we left behind are still very much concerned about the situation back home. We need to let them know that the Mar-Leni tandem is the best presidential team for the future of our country.”
Navarra said light lunch will be served during the rally.
Filipinos are invited to attend the rally, but RSVP is required.
