Are you eligible for citizenship?

You are eligible to become a United States citizen if you have been a legal resident for five years or three years if you are married to a US citizen.

Becoming a US citizen is the best investment you can make in your life. You can ask people who had gone through this legal process, and they will tell you it is indeed a good move.

You would have several benefits if you are a US citizen. First and foremost is that you can vote in elections. But, of course, you have to register as a voter after you have taken your oath of citizenship.

There are many people who are being deported for various reasons, but if you are a US citizen, you are safe from being deported.

One of the problems of living here in the US is that we have left our loved ones in our native country. As a US citizen, you can petition for family members to join you in this land of opportunity. The petitioning process would be faster if you are a US citizen.

You can also travel for as long as you want outside of this country without any legal consequence.

Legal residents, who are not citizens, can’t be out of this country more than six months because of the prohibition provided in the immigration rules.

You can learn more about immigration rules and the citizenship process when the Michigan chapter of National Federation of Filipino American Associations (NaFFAA) will host a seminar-workshop on this topic to be conducted by the Michigan Immigrant Right Center on April 27, 2013 from 1 to 5 p.m. at the Philippine American Community Center of Michigan.

Volunteers will help you complete the application forms for citizenship. You don’t have to pay for someone to prepare your application.

To participate in the seminar, you must register in advance. Also, you have to make a reservation by calling Ruby Robinson at 734-998-6100 (local 459).

This event is being supported by the Filipino American Community Council, Filipino Political Association of Michigan and the Asian Pacific Islander American (APIA) Vote-Michigan.

The seminar-workshop will be conducted by licensed attorneys and accredited representatives who will screen your application

and ensure that you are eligible to apply for naturalization.

So what are you waiting for? This is an opportunity for you to become a citizen. Take advantage of it.
